Most serious steelhead and salmon flyfishers who fish medium to large size rivers have come to realize the advantages of spey casting. On big rivers, double hauling all day with an 8 or 9 weight system is quite tiresome. Experienced spey casters can put out 100 feet of line with one cast! Spey casting is also extremely effective where streamside vegetation inhibits a backcast when using a conventional fly rod. Most importantly, proper utilization of a spey rod is much more efficient as your fly will spend much more time doing what it should be doing and that's being in the water attracting fish, as opposed to a single handed rod where a good portion of our time is spent stripping the line back in (with a spey rod you do not strip the line back in) or pumping the rod 3 or 4 times to work the line back out!
At Michael & Young, we can be a big help in assisting you if you are considering purchasing a spey rod as most of our employees are avid and accomplished spey casters. As we are familiar with the benefits and pitfalls of most of the different models, we can help you choose a model that is suited to your personal situation. For example, models that are lightweight and suited for dry fly fishing may be a dream to cast, but are often too soft to throw heavy sink tips that are all too often required when targeting winter steelhead. Additionally, we can help you choose flyline systems that offer versatility, yet properly load your rod! Over the years, we have spent a small fortune experimenting with and often splicing various flyline systems in search of superiority.

VT2 Series rods are Sage's newest additions to an already exceptional line up of rods. They are replacing the VPS series as a medium fast action rod. Available in 3 through 10 weight models each is designed to fit its niche, meaning the 3 weight has a smooth, progressive taper for delicate presentation while the 10 weight has a faster more powerful action for casting big flies in the wind.

After working with a small, tight-lipped group of serious bass anglers, we’ve developed two new rods that can drop a hair frog or an air-light diver with pinpoint accuracy and hardly a ripple on the water. From a fly fishing perspective, we’re talking about effortlessly pushing big, wind-resistant bugs into tight quarters. Available in two models, Smallmouth and Largemouth, both rods measure 7'11", which slides them just under the strict bass tournament rules for rod length. Additionally, both rods are sold with custom bass taper flylines and a travel case for protection.
When used outside the bass fishing world, we strongly recommend them for probing the mangroves or throwing huge flies for pike and muskies.
